About Varalakshmi Vratham
About

Varalakshmi Vratham

The traditional katha

This is the katha traditionally told by those who keep this vrata; no Purana source was found for it.

The sage Suta told this story to the sages, and he said it was the same story that Lord Shiva once told to Goddess Parvati. Parvati had asked Shiva about a vrata that would bring good to women, and Shiva told her that the Varalakshmi vrata was the best of all for them. To show its greatness, he told her about a woman named Charumati.

In the kingdom of Magadha there was a town called Kundina. In that town lived a Brahmin woman named Charumati. She was not rich, but she was humble and kind, and she served her husband and his parents with great love and care. She was devoted to Goddess Lakshmi.

The Goddess was pleased with her good heart and her devotion. One night she appeared to Charumati in a dream. She said she was happy with her goodness, and she taught her the Varalakshmi vrata. She told her to keep it on the Friday before the full moon of the month of Shravana, and promised that it would bring blessings to her home, her family, her town and the whole kingdom.

When Charumati woke, the Goddess was gone. She told her husband's parents about the dream. They said it was a very auspicious dream and that the vrata must be kept.

When the Friday came, Charumati invited the other women of the town, her neighbours, friends and relatives, to join her. Together they worshipped the Goddess with devotion, just as she had taught Charumati in the dream.

The Goddess blessed them all. Wealth and plenty came into their homes. Charumati's family, the town and the kingdom lived happily, without want, with plenty of cattle, milk and grain. The women thanked Charumati for teaching them the vrata, and from then on they waited with joy for Shravana to come again, so that they could keep it once more.

ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः। वरलक्ष्मी प्रसीद मे।।
Om śrīṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ mahālakṣmyai namaḥ, varalakṣmī prasīda me.
"Om Shrim Hrim Shrim, salutations to Mahalakshmi. O Varalakshmi, be pleased with me."

Tradition & Practice
🏺
Kalasha Puja (Pot Worship)
The central ritual is the consecration of a kalasha: a copper or clay pot filled with water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, and decorated with a face drawn in turmeric and kumkum. This pot is treated as the living embodiment of Varalakshmi. It is placed on a bed of raw rice, decorated with flowers and new saree, and worshipped as the goddess herself.
💤
Story of Charumati
Goddess Lakshmi appeared in a dream to a devoted woman named Charumati in the city of Kundina and said: “Tomorrow is the Friday of Shravana: worship me as a kalasha, tie a golden thread, and I will bless your home.” Charumati did so and was immensely blessed. She shared the instructions with other women, and the vrat tradition spread across South India from that day.
🧵
Sacred Thread Tying
A key ritual of Varalakshmi Vrat is tying a sacred golden or yellow thread (called Varalakshmi or poonal) around the kalasha while chanting mantras. After the puja, women tie a similar thread around their right wrist as a blessed armour. This thread is worn for several days. The act of tying represents binding Lakshmi's presence to the home.
👩
Who Celebrates
Varalakshmi Vrat is primarily observed by married women (sumangalis) in Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil communities: in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and among diaspora communities in the US, UK, Australia, and Singapore. The puja is often done together by groups of women who rotate hosting duties year to year.
✨
Eight Forms of Lakshmi
Varalakshmi Vrat invokes all eight Ashtalakshmi: Dhana Lakshmi (wealth), Dhanya Lakshmi (grain and food), Dhairya Lakshmi (courage), Gaja Lakshmi (strength), Santana Lakshmi (children), Vijaya Lakshmi (victory), Vidya Lakshmi (knowledge), and Vara Lakshmi (boon-granting). Worshipping Varalakshmi is said to be equivalent to worshipping all eight forms at once.
🍛
Neivedyam (Sacred Food)
The food offerings (neivedyam) prepared for Varalakshmi are elaborate and festive. Typical offerings include chakra pongali (sweet rice pudding), pulihora (tamarind rice), vada, payasam, fruits, coconut, and betel leaves. Women also prepare modakam or kozhukattai. The neivedyam is first offered to the goddess, then shared with invited women as prasad.
