About Hala Shashti
About

Hala Shashti

Hala Shashti (Hal Shashthi, Balarama Shashti) falls on Krishna Paksha Shashthi (Shravana Krishna Shashthi under the amanta month reckoning used across South and West India, Bhadrapada Krishna Shashthi under the purnimanta reckoning used across North India), celebrated primarily in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. It is the birthday of Lord Balarama, Krishna's elder brother: whose weapon is the hala (plough) and who is the god of agriculture and strength.

On this day, mothers fast for the longevity and prosperity of their sons, in much the same spirit as Karwa Chauth (for husbands). The fast begins at sunrise and is broken only after worshipping the hala-shashthi deity at sunset. Women observe strict rules: they do not touch any implement made with ox-work (plough-tilled grain, iron tools associated with tilling) and eat only foods grown without ploughing: wild fruits, roots, water chestnuts, and buffalo milk products.

The festival also carries a touching agricultural message: the earth rests on Hala Shashti. Since Balarama carries the plough, ploughing the earth on his birthday is considered disrespectful. Farmers symbolically give the earth a day of rest, echoing ancient soil-conservation wisdom. Many stories in local tradition describe Balarama himself ploughing rivers, redirecting the Yamuna, and using his mighty hala to reshape the landscape.

Tradition & Practice
🌾
Mothers' Fast
Women fast all day for the longevity and prosperity of their sons. The fast is broken at sunset after puja. No plough-tilled grain is consumed: only foods grown without the help of the ox.
⚒️
Lord Balarama
Balarama is Krishna's elder brother, known for his superhuman strength, love of ploughing, and fondness for toddy (soma wine). His weapons are the plough (hala) and the mace (musala).
🌱
Earth Rests Today
Ploughing is forbidden on Hala Shashti as a mark of respect to Balarama. The tradition embeds an ancient soil-health principle: letting the earth rest on this day after the monsoon planting season.
🏞️
Balarama and the Yamuna
Mythology records that Balarama, angered when the Yamuna river did not come to him, dragged it with his plough: explaining the river's many curves. This episode is celebrated in Vrindavana.
🍎
Permitted Foods
On Hala Shashti, women eat only non-ploughed foods: water chestnuts (singhara), wild fruits, sawa rice, milk and curd from buffalo (not cow). This ritual diet honours the resting earth.
🌊
Milky Sixth
In some regions the day is called Dugdha Shashthi (Milky Sixth) because buffalo milk and milk-products are the central foods. A bath in a river or tank before sunrise is also part of the observance.
