About Gowri Tritiya
About

Gowri Tritiya

The traditional katha

This is the katha traditionally told by those who keep this vrata; no Purana source was found for it.

In the vrata tradition, this story is told by Lord Shiva to his son Shanmukha. Shanmukha had asked his father for a vow that anyone could keep, one that would bring children, prosperity and happiness. Shiva answered him with the story of the Swarna Gowri Vrata.

Once there was a king named Chandraprabha who ruled the city of Vimalapura, on the banks of the river Saraswati. He had two queens, and of the two he loved the elder queen more.

One day the king went hunting in a thick forest. He hunted until he grew tired and thirsty, and he came to a pond. There he found a group of women worshipping together. He asked them what puja they were doing.

The women told him that it was the Swarna Gowri Vrata. Married women keep it on the Tritiya of the bright half of Bhadrapada, they said, and the goddess grants every wish to those who keep it. They told him how it is done.

The king kept the vrata there with devotion. He tied the sacred thread of the puja on his right wrist and went home to his palace. There he told both his queens about the greatness of the Swarna Gowri Vrata.

The elder queen did not believe him. In her anger she pulled the sacred thread from the king's wrist and threw it away onto a plant that had dried up.

A few days later, fresh green leaves sprouted on that dry plant. The younger queen saw this. She took the thread from the plant, tied it on her own wrist, and worshipped Gowri with full faith. The goddess blessed her with wealth, a happy home and the love of the king.

The elder queen, who had scorned the vrata, lost her place in the palace. She wandered through the forests, suffering and weeping. At last Goddess Parvati appeared before her and comforted her. The queen understood her mistake. She kept the Swarna Gowri Vrata with devotion, and Gowri forgave her and blessed her with happiness and the love of her husband. After that the king and the queen lived happily together.

Gaurī śaṅkarasambhūtā haimī puṣpasamudbhavā, haripriyā mahādevī siddhidātrī namo'stu te.
"Born of Shankara, arising like a golden flower, beloved of Hari, the great Goddess who grants all perfections: salutations to you."

Tradition & Practice
🪙
Swarna Gowri Idol
The central ritual is the installation of the Swarna Gowri idol: an image of Parvati made of gold, silver, or turmeric. "Swarna" means gold, reflecting the golden hue associated with Parvati in her benevolent, auspicious form. The idol is placed on a decorated mantapa and invoked with the full shodashopachara (16-step) puja.
💚
Karnataka's Greatest Women's Festival
Swarna Gowri Vratam is arguably the most important women's festival in Karnataka, observed by virtually every married Kannada Hindu woman regardless of caste or region. Daughters return to their parents' homes to observe it, similar to how women return home for Diwali or Navratri in other states: it is both a religious and a family reunion occasion.
📅
The Day Before Ganesh Arrives
Gowri Tritiya falls on Bhadra Shukla Tritiya, exactly one day before Ganesh Chaturthi (the 4th). The sequencing is deliberate and symbolic: the mother arrives before the son. Parvati enters the home first, blesses the household, and then makes way for Ganesha's grand arrival the following day. Together, they occupy the home for the Chaturthi period.
💛
Gold, Turmeric, and Jewelry
Gold and turmeric are the colors of this festival. Women wear their finest gold jewelry, and turmeric is central to the ritual: rubbed on the idol, mixed into kumkum, and used to make the turmeric Gowri idol when a metal one is not available. The connection between gold, turmeric, and feminine auspiciousness runs deep in South Indian tradition.
🙏
Dashavatara Puja and Vrat Katha
As part of the puja, married women observe a vrat (vow) and listen to the Gowri Vrat Katha: stories of how devout women received Parvati's blessings for marital happiness and children's welfare. The Dashavatara (ten avatars of Vishnu) puja is also sometimes incorporated, reflecting the syncretic Shaiva-Vaishnava nature of Karnataka's religious culture.
🌊
Return of Gowri: Visarjana
After Ganesh Chaturthi ends, Goddess Gowri is also ceremonially sent back (visarjana): either immersed in water along with Ganesha or placed back in the puja room with a farewell ritual. This mirrors the emotional farewell of Ganesh Visarjana: the devotee prays for Gowri to return next year and to continue blessing the household with her golden grace.
