About

Bijayā Daśamī (Durgā Visarjan)

Bijoya Dashami (বিজয়া দশমী) is the last day of Durgā Pūjā, the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Ashvina. After four days at her parents' home, Ma Durga, the beloved daughter, returns to her husband Shiva on Kailash. The day is joyful and tearful at once: the Mother has won her victory, and now she must leave.

In the morning the Dashami puja is offered and the Mother is given leave. Married women come for Debi Boron, the farewell: they offer sweets, paan and betel nut, touch vermilion to her forehead and feet, and wipe her face as a mother would before a daughter's long journey. Then comes Sindur Khela, when the women smear vermilion on one another, praying for long married lives and happy homes.

A mirror is placed before the Mother and her reflection is immersed in water, the darpan visarjan. Then the images are carried out in procession with dhak drums, conch shells and cries of "Asche bochor abar hobe!" ("It will happen again next year!"), and immersed in the river or a pond. In some homes Aparajita, the unconquered Devi, is also worshipped on this day.

When the family comes home, the Bijoya greetings begin: the young touch the feet of their elders and receive blessings, friends and equals embrace in kolakuli, and everyone shares sweets, narkel naru, nimki and more. The visits and greetings go on for days.

गच्छ गच्छ परं स्थानं स्वस्थानं परमेश्वरि। संवत्सरव्यतीते तु पुनरागमनाय वै॥
Gaccha gaccha paraṃ sthānaṃ svasthānaṃ parameśvari, saṃvatsaravyatīte tu punarāgamanāya vai.
"Go, go, O Supreme Goddess, to your highest abode, your own abode, so that you may come again when the year has passed."

Tradition & Practice
🙏
Debi Boron (The Farewell)
Married women bid the Mother goodbye as one bids a daughter: they offer sweets, paan and betel nut, touch vermilion to her forehead and feet, and wipe her face before her journey home to Kailash.
🔴
Sindur Khela
After the farewell the women play with vermilion (sindur), smearing it on one another's foreheads and cheeks, praying for long married lives, happy homes and the Mother's blessing until she returns next year.
🪞
Darpan Visarjan (The Mirror)
A mirror is held before the Mother and her reflection is immersed in a bowl of water. With this, she is given leave, and the images may be taken for immersion.
🥁
Procession and Immersion
The images are carried through the streets to the beat of the dhak, with conch shells, dancing and cries of "Asche bochor abar hobe!", and immersed in the river or a pond. Crowds follow with tears, as at a daughter's leaving.
🤝
Bijoya Greetings
Back home, the young touch the feet of their elders for blessings, friends embrace in kolakuli, and letters and visits of Bijoya greeting go on for days.
🍬
Sweets of Bijoya
Every home offers sweets to its visitors: narkel naru (coconut balls), crisp nimki, sandesh and more. No guest leaves without a sweet mouth.
🌸
Aparajita Puja
In some homes Aparajita, the unconquered Devi, is worshipped on this day, for victory and protection in the year ahead.
