About

Annakūṭa

Annakūṭa, literally a “mountain of food,” is the offering of a vast and varied spread of cooked grains, sweets, and vegetables to Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa and Govardhana Hill. The tradition recalls how the villagers of Vraja first offered a mountain of food to Govardhana Hill itself, before Kṛṣṇa lifted the hill to shelter them from Indra's torrential rain.

Annakūṭa is especially prominent in Vaiṣṇava temples, particularly those of the Puṣṭimārga (Vallabha Sampradāya), and is widely celebrated across North Indian temples on this day, which falls on Kārtika Śukla Pratipadā, the day after Dīpāvalī.
