By the blessing and grace of Jagadguru Shri Bharata Tirtha Mahaswamigal, I have been a priest at the Shringeri Temple since the kumbhabhishekam in 2010. The establishment of this holy site has provided a great opportunity for me and fellow Hindus of the Greater Toronto Area to uphold Sanatana Dharma in a manner that is mandated by upadesham (spiritual teachings – in this case, Vedanta).
There are two main ways to follow this dharmic path (as stated in the Vedas):
- Jnana Kanda (philosophical teachings of Upanishads)
- Karma Kanda (rituals, ceremonies, and other sacred rites).
Since Jnana Kanda is difficult to pursue, most opt into performance of rituals as per Karma Kanda.
When performing rituals, timing is of paramount importance. Thus, to perform these rites at an auspicious time and muhurtha, a practice called jyothisha-shastram (prediction of movements of astronomical bodies to keep time) is employed. This discipline is so important for all that it is described in the Vedas as a set of special eyes (chakshu). To help people in the GTA perform dharmic rituals properly, With the help of Pandit Mahesh Shastriji, I bring you this Hindu calendar with auspicious timings that can be applied in the Toronto area. I will be able to help you with auspicious timings, religious puja for your ceremony. I am well versed with South Indian and North Indian ceremonies. I know Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and English.
