Muhurtham
The readymade muhurtha available in most online panchang or print panchang are based in India, and they are very general purpose. Even if you are living in India, it may not be applicable to you. Those ready made muhurthas are certainly not applicable outside of india. Most people living abroad think that they can safely subtract their time difference from india time and get muhurtha. This is completely wrong assumption. One cannot substract the timezone from muhurtha given in indian panchangam or by an astrologer in india by just subtracting the timezone. If the astrologer has taken longitude, latitude and local sunrise of the place into calculation then its okay. Otherwise it's not. Please remember that panchangam available in india are designed and prepared only for india and they cannot be applicable outside of india. It is sad that most well educated indians who live abroad still think muhurtha abroad = indian muhurtha time - time difference. Please remember one needs to calculate muhurtha for your city. Please note that that muhurtha calculated for Chennai or Hyderabad will not be applicable to New delhi (And they are in the same time zone. Using those indian muhurtha abroad is different thing altogether).

Following important points for calculating muhurtha:

  • Muhurtha is heavily dependent on local events like local sunrise, sunset. Most coutries in northern latitudes beyond 35 degrees north will have sunrise in summer around 4:00 am. The sun will set in winter around 9:30 pm or even beyond. During winter sun will rise after 8:00 AM and will set around 3:30 PM. This isn't case with india.
  • One will note that on Mondays rahukalam starts at 7:30 am. Now during winter if sun rises at 8:15 AM how can rahukalam start at 7:30 AM? before the sunrise? This is another wrong assumption using fix rahukalam timings. The standard time and clocks were introduced by britishers in india, before that we used ghati--gadiyalu etc... Hence this means one can't even use fixed rahukalam even in india using abroad is wrong thing. Rahukalam etc are dependent on local events like the sunrise, sunset etc....
  • Another important factor in calculating muhurtha is the lagna shuddhi. Lagnashuddhi is the boss of muhurtha. Lagna shuddhi means removing afflication by planets at the time of muhurtha. Now to do that we prepare jatakam / kundali at the time of muhurtha which is heavily dependent on local longitude, latitude. This means you cannot convert time to indian time and prepare kundli / jatakam.
  • Among many other factors, one has to check rasi bala, tara bala, surya bala, guru bala, agnivasa, udayastha, chandara mukham (for graha pravesha etc...) and other details.

There are only four general purpose muhurtha that is valid all over the world depending upon tithi falling on that day in that location. Look for the normal rule -- thithi prevailing at the sunrise. So open mypanchang to find your city in there and find those days in panchangam for that city.

These days are:

  • Chaitra Shukla Prathama. (Yugadi / Gudi padawa)
  • Akshya Tritiya
  • Dasera
  • Karthik Shukla Prathama.
For other days you cannot use general purpose muhurthams printed in panchang. These are printed for benefit of astrologers who can use them to narrow down to your nakshatra (star) and rasi. But once again these are valid for India only not valid outside of India.

Do you need any special muhurtha? We request you to send us email providing us with all the required information on this form. **Please note: Muhurtham is a free service provided by mypanchang.com by connecting you and our volunteer astrologers.
  • Our muhurthas are done by Pundit Sri Sistla Somayajulu. He is a volunteering at mypanchang.com. Muhurtha calculation is a time consuming job. For each muhurtha an astrologer has to go through various tasks. There is no such thing as a general purpose muhurtha for all. If a muhurtha is a good for one can be bad for another person. Hence it takes a lot of time to calculate muhurtha. What you see some muhurtha dates on some sites, or in some printed panchangs, are just panchang shuddhi days for a given occasion. That also applicable in india only. Those panchang shuddhi days aren't applicable outside India. Hence, an astrologer has to calculate panchang shuddhi days for your location and then calculate your muhurtha. If you like muhurthas by him you can send any sambhavana directly to him for his muhurtha services. However it's not required BUT according to dharmashastras it's advised to give any sambhavana to astrologer for his services. He is currently visiting united states. You can contact him directly at 603-521-8820 to personalize your muhurtha. However, he isn't asking for money but it's good to give sambhavana to astrologer to seek his blessings. Please donot send any money to mypanchang.com for muhurtha services done by our volunteer astrolgoers. They are volunteering their time to us. They are not our employees. They are working on honorary basis.
  • We will never ask you for any private information such as your social security number, bank a/c number etc. If you receive any such unsolicited email that appears to be sent from us, please forward it to us with full email headers.  Thanks!
  • We get many request to provide simple do it yourself grahapravesha procedure. We advise you to take help of the expert priest for such things. However, sometimes it's not just possible to get one. Hence we are posting a simple document which can be downloaded here. Please remember this does not replace priest. This is the simple basic document will explain you how to do grahapravesha when priest / pujari is not available.
